Katsu, sushi and soy sauce this good are dangerous. Especially when dining with Saucepiggy.

I’m wary about reviewing Sushi Yachiyo in Darlinghurst – it’s busy enough already – but, with outposts in Surry Hills and Mosman, I hope there’s enough sushi to go around. It’s a small, dark venue that fills up quickly and pumps out some seriously delicious Japanese food. I’m also wary about going here with Saucepiggy, who is known to slurp gallons of sauce when dining companions are distracted – share at your own risk.

My tip? Skip the menu and order individual pieces of sushi, sashimi and a serve of chicken katsu. The fish is very fresh and they import a Japanese soy sauce which you could drink on it’s own (come to think of it, why hasn’t nearby gelato messina made a gelato from it?). Edamame makes a good starter while you wait. But chicken katsu is king – sitting on some leaves and drizzled with sauce and mayonnaise that is probably loaded with calories, but you won’t be able to stop eating. Saucepiggy certainly couldn’t (should have seen that coming, shouldn’t I?). Apparently I’ve ruined her favourite katsu venue in Hong Kong for her – it can’t compare to the delicious crumbed chicken here.

There are always specials on the blackboard as well as a long menu – if you really must open it, try the gozen. Prices are great and service is friendly.

I could eat this every day. Now off to messina to talk about that gelato flavour…
